We believe in giving back!

Doctors with a Heart

In 1999, Deerhaven founding doctor, Steven Niergarth, D.D.S., introduced Doctors With a Heart to the Grand Traverse Area. Since that time Deerhaven Family Dentistry has provided over half a million dollars in free dental services to individuals and families within our community who would ordinarily not be able to afford dental services.

Each February the team of Deerhaven Family Dentistry reserves one full day to work for free on anyone who arrives at our door. No questions asked. No payments accepted. We work through area agencies to make certain the people who need such a day are notified in advance and that they can take advantage of this community outreach.

Since setting an example of community outreach, several other local offices have joined the effort. We are proud to say that thousands of people have been helped over the years. It is our pleasure to give back to our community.

Veterans Day FREE Dental Clinic

Dr. Lance Beers has been an active member of the Michigan National Guard for six years. His services sparked a passion for veterans and in 2015 Dr. Beers inspired Deerhaven Family Dentistry to open its doors to all area veterans for one day, on a first come-first serve basis, to provide dental services for FREE. Our entire team volunteers their time to humbly serve those who have served our country.

Guatemala  Mission Dentistry

The doctors at Deerhaven Dentistry enjoy traveling to Guatemala on mission trips to help the underserved Mayan population.  Dr. Niergarth’s son, Jake, was born in Guatemala and this is his way of giving back to the country.

Dr. Niergarth began the tradition many years ago, and Drs. Merrithew and Beers have since joined in on several trips.  Dr. Niergarth and his wife Lisa have also established a permanent dental clinic in Chichicastenango, Guatemala and travel there frequently.  Through the help of Drs. Niergarth, Merrithew, and Beers, thousands of Guatemalan people have received free dental care through the years.

Dr. Niergarth mentored six U-M Dental School students at the Manos de Jesus dental clinic in February 2017.  He is an adjunct instructor on the U-M faculty.
