Dr. Steven Niergarth
Dr. Steve Niergarth is a 1985 graduate of the University of Michigan. Having grown up in Traverse City, he knew he wanted to return to our beautiful area upon graduation. He started Deerhaven Dentistry that year with one employee, and it has since grown to three dentists and over twenty employees. While very proud of the dental practice he helped to build, he is even more proud of his family. He and his wife, Lisa, have two sons, Nick and Jake, and a daughter, Natalie. He enjoys running, hiking, fishing, camping, and boating. They live near Cedar, along with son Jake, who is currently studying graphic design at Northwestern Michigan College. Nick lives and works in the area, and Natalie resides in Washington, DC.
Dr. Niergarth and his wife Lisa have done numerous mission dentistry trips to Guatemala, where son Jake was born. They started a permanent dental clinic in Chichicastenango, Guatemala in 2013 and travel back there frequently. He also began the Doctors With A Heart program in Traverse City in 1999, which treats, at no charge, those who can’t afford dental care.
Dr. Niergarth has been awarded Fellowships in both the Academy of Dentistry International and also the International College of Dentists. He was named a co-recipient of the Michigan Dental Association Public Service Award in 2017, for his work in helping military veterans in the area. Dr. Niergarth is a member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association, and the Resort District Dental Society. He is an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
Dr. Jason Merrithew
Dr. Jason Merrithew has been in private practice since 2004 in Traverse City, and is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry class of 2004. He and his wife Carrie have two amazing children. Hanna (15) is a freshman at St Francis High School, Andrew (11) is in 5th grade, and they also have two Newfoundland dogs, “Molly” and “Charlie”. As a family the Merrithews are very active in sports and their community. They enjoy running, boating, ice hockey and being active outdoors.
Dr. Merrithew is one of three dentists at Deerhaven Family Dentistry and, like his partners, has a philosophy of giving back to others in the community and abroad. Dr. Merrithew will be going on his fourth dental mission trip to Guatemala in January 2018. After being exposed to this type of service to others by Dr. Niergarth back in 2010, Dr. Merrithew has embraced donating his time and skills to those in need. He has been a part of Deerhaven’s annual ‘Doctors with a Heart’ free dental day in Traverse City each year since 2005. In 2015 Dr. Merrithew partnered with the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry as a preceptor and mentor for their dental students through the ‘Victors for Veterans’ program, and he also enjoys helping our highly deserving military veterans through Deerhaven Family Dentistry’s free Veterans Day dental clinic.
Dr. Merrithew has received numerous awards. He, along with his partners Dr. Beers and Dr. Niergarth, received a 2017 Public Service Award from the Michigan Dental Association. He is a fellow-elect with the Academy of Dentistry International, from whom he will receive his Fellowship at the American Dental Association Annual Session 2018, and has been awarded ‘Top Docs’ by his peers in northern Michigan numerous times.
